International Development

Ecologic Institute's work extends beyond the European Union. Projects in the area of international development cover the monitoring and analysis of European international development policy as well as studies on environmental policy in countries of the Global South. In addition to policy, economic and legal analyses, team members have extensive experience leading expert visits, study tours and summer academies to build capacities and encourage exchange between European professionals and those from the Global South. In addition, Ecologic Institute's research provides the respective countries' governments with information about developing robust environmental and climate governance frameworks.

As with its European work, Ecologic Institute covers a range of environmental issues related to countries of the Global South. Team members are particularly active in the fields of coastal and marine management, water, climate adaptation, biodiversity, ecosystem services, agriculture, green infrastructure, nature-based solutions, sustainable consumption, air quality management, and bioeconomy.

The development team has profound regional expertise in Latin American and the Caribbean region, but also in parts of Asia (e.g. China, Mongolia, Vietnam), Africa (e.g. Morocco, Ethiopia), and the Middle East.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the key reference point for international development cooperation and guide the work of Ecologic Institute in this field. Ecologic Institute also supports the European Union’s work on achieving them  through the monitoring of the 2030 Agenda.
